The Yanks gave
Jason Johnson a minor-league deal, according to Peter Abraham. Girardi said Johnson will compete for the fifth spot in the rotation, but unless he can somehow bounce back to his 2005 form, he'll be starting the season in the minors.
In other news,
Shelley "Frankenstein" Duncan was designated for assignment to make room for Mark Teixeira on the 40-man roster. Someone will take a chance on Duncan, you'd think. He had a horrible 2008 season (in the majors and in AAA), but he's got raw power and raked against lefties back in 2007.
It'll be sad to see Frankenstein and his spaz energy leave, as Abraham says in his post, he'll probably wind up with his brother and father in St. Louis.
Here's a wager for you: How much do you want to bet the Indians get more for their
$1.6M Carl Pavano contract than the Yanks got for their $39M contract for him?
My roommate is deadset on believing that Pavano is going to win 15 games this year for Cleveland. Great signing for them, low-risk high-reward (aren't those the types of guys we should be signing to compete for #5?).
I honestly won't miss Duncan that much, he was fun in 2007 but in 2008 it was automatic that he would ground out trying to pull a home run, it was really annoying to watch him be an out-maker. I will miss his passion though.
On a side note, his greatest moment as a Yankee:
At Spring Training a little boy, probably 10 years in age, asked him for an autograph. The boy was wearing a Red Sox hat, so Shelley promptly signed his notepad:
"Red Sox suck! Shelly Duncan"

That picture is awesome!
Ungrateful little bastard. I hope he cried himself to sleep.
