Yankees, Orioles Opening Day Preview

It's time to Play Ball!

That is, if the weather holds up in Baltimore.

The Bombers will begin their quest for championship No. 27 Monday against the O's.  I'm stuck at work and won't catch a second of live action, but I'll be listening to John and Suzy call the action courtesy of MLB.com.  Here's a quick look at what to expect as these AL East rivals square off in Game 1 of 162.

First, the Opening Day lineups:

New York Yankees
1. Derek Jeter, SS
2. Johnny Damon, LF
3. Mark Teixeira, 1B
4. Hideki Matsui, DH
5. Jorge Posada, C
6. Robinson Cano, 2B
7. Xavier Nady, RF
8. Cody Ransom, 3B
9. Brett Gardner, CF

Baltimore Orioles
1. Brian Roberts, 2B
2. Adam Jones, CF
3. Nick Markakis, RF
4. Melvin Mora, 3B
5. Aubrey Huff, 1B
6. Ty Wigginton, DH
7. Luke Scott, LF
8. Gregg Zaun, C
9. Cesar Izturis, SS

And the pitching matchups:

CC Sabathia (17-10, 2.70 ERA) gets the nod for the Yanks and right-hander Jeremy Guthrie (10-12, 3.63) goes for the Orioles.  Guthrie finished 1-2 with a 4.05 ERA in three starts against the Bombers last season, but the Yanks managed to bat only .216 against him as a team.  Melkey Cabrera (.417) and Nick Swisher (.444) have good career numbers against Guthrie, but aren't in the lineup.  Johnny Damon is 6 for 18 against Guthrie (.333) with a homer and 2 RBI.  Sabathia did not pitch against the O's in 2008, but he's 5-0 with a 2.38 ERA in nine career starts against the Birds.  The big lefty is also 3-0 with a 2.60 ERA in four career starts at Camden Yards.  Baltimore first baseman Aubrey Huff has the most career at-bats against Sabathia and has hit him fairly well.  Huff is 7 for 25 (.280) with two doubles.

Let's set the tone, fellas.

Comical opening ceremony in Baltimore. Michael Kay seems pumped up.

So, do we keep Damon's broken bat counter going? Glad Singleton's in the booth.

Sabathia has yet to crack 90MPH. Single, wide pitch. Man on second, no one out.

3-1 Ballmer in the bottom of the third. cc dug his own hole.

Are you watching this at home?

well cc looks like everything i knew hed be.. a bum a bust a fat toad.. yanks cant hit we didnt sign abreau we got much worse on offense and now we have to deal with this fat pig CC every 5th day he nothing more that a pitcher with a mid 4s era this is a disgrace that he will be pitching opening day at the new stadium .. someone should be hanged for putting this pathetic team on the field

There's only one pitcher in Yankee lore that should ever be called a fat toad, Tom -- the immortal Hideki Irabu.

just like last season yanks are down 3-1 and have absolutly noooooo chance to comeback this game might as well be 12-0 this team is dead heartless no one can be clutch i hate this team put it in the L colum .... did i mention i bet the yanks

first and third 2 out for matsui is there any doubt about the outcome??

Actually, I was expecting a groundout to second, not a pop out to third. So it was surprising.

Bomb for Jorge to cut it to 6-2.

u cant blame joey G for the disaster this season its all front office .. signing cc letting abreu go not getting johan last year we will be a 3rd place team for years to come guys

CC's a slow starter, just relax.

2 run bomb by sui just enough to give u false hope we can come back.. however if we do come back or tie the game it will be a shame that cc wont get the loss that fat pig should get 2 losses for his outing

cc and jamie moyer are 2 lefties with the same velocity i hope cc blows his arm out and we get phil hughes back... need a clutch hit from the x man here

heh. clutch hit.

lead off double 1000 bucks we dont score

Good use of the pen by Girardi there. 8-5 now.

ok now we can blame joe g for the failure this season .. why is phil coke still pitching?? u have bruney warming up and a righty hitter .. same ole joe same ole yanks

game. set. match. good work joey.
