All rumor roads lead back to two men at this point, although I'm not sure how much weight to put behind any of them. Anyway, here's the latest scuttlebutt on Mark Teixeira and Manny Ramirez, and my take on the rumors.
Teixeira- NY Times - The Yanks are interested in Teixeira somewhere in the 8/$160 range. Of course, other rumors would make you believe the winning bid will be well north of that.
- My Take: This doesn't really seem like news to me. Of course the Yanks would be interested if they'd get a huge discount.
- Newsday - The Yanks are on the periphery of the Teixeira chase. Boras told the Yanks it would take 8/$180M to get him.
- My Take: Again, this seems logical to me. The Yanks probably remain on the periphery of every major FA left on the market. The Boras part of the rumor sounds like an attempt to get the Yanks involved to push the price up for the other teams.
Manny- Newsday - Mark Feisand is reporting that Manny has told friends he's sure the Yanks will offer him a three-year deal. He reported earlier that they'd make an offer upwards of 3/$66, but no offer had been made.
- My Take: If the Yanks are, indeed, interested in Manny, the timing may be everything. If they make their offer before Teixeira lands, their absence from that chase could lead to a discounted price for the Sox to obtain him. On the other hand, if Teix signs with someone other than the Angels, there could be another team in on Manny. Ultimately, I doubt the Yanks make any kind of move on Manny before Teixeira finally lands.
So that's where things stand as of Sunday morning. It looks like Teixeira is tiring of the whole process and will make up his mind soon. If the Yanks are serious players for him, they need to step up to the plate quickly.
