Todd Jones Blows More Than Just Saves

I love it when people try to make me feel guilty for being a Yankee fan. It cracks me up, really. For some reason they seem to think I should abandon my favorite team, the team that I watched lose and barely compete for most of the 80s and early 90s, just because they've become successful. I should trade in my Yankee hat because the Steinbrenners actually put money back into their team, rather than their pockets (or a Ponzi scheme, in some cases.) Usually, I just laugh at them because they're the same jackasses that asked me how I could root for a team that never makes the playoffs back in the Mattingly era.

I'm going to have to draw the line, though, when shitty closers start writing stories for the Sporting News blasting the Yanks for their free agent spending ways, and their fans for rooting for them.

I find it especially tickling that this douche with his bad porno mustache didn't have a whole lot to say last winter when it was his team that was flexing its financial muscle. The Tigers added $42.5M to their payroll from 2007 to 2008. What did it get them? A dead-last finish. They finished worse than the Royals.

You know what, maybe I'm being too hard on Jones. Maybe he isn't a hypocrite after all. Maybe deep down his egalitarian beliefs led to his 1.63 WHIP. Maybe it just wasn't in him to give all he had to a team that spent so much darned money on their roster. I mean, who wants to root for a favorite. Every team he faced was the underdog, he had to be rooting for them. Maybe he was so overcome by guilt he decided he couldn't do it anymore after August 15th and he just quit. I wonder if he gave back any of the $7M he was paid to stink up the joint? After all, he did sign that 1-year $7M contract amidst the Tigers' offseason spending spree.

I have a deal for you, Todd. How about you don't tell me who I should and shouldn't root for, and I won't give you any advice about trying to sneak 83mph fastballs past major league hitters. Sound fair?

Hahahahaha, awesome!

He's a fool.

Most people are too stupid to realize that the Yankees didn't actually add any payroll (for 2009, at least). They just replaced the expiring contracts of Giambi, Abreu, Mussina, Pettitte, and Pavano, as well as the trade of Kyle Farnsworth during the season last year.

Plus, the Yankees also know that about $26 million is coming off the books when Damon and Matsui's contracts are up after this season, and hopefully Austin Jackson is ready to step in and play OF everyday, at the ML minimum

Nady is a FA after this season as well, so that's probably another $5M-$8M off the books.

Haha, incredible post. As a White Sox fan, I've got nothing but respect for the Yanks. The class of the MLB.
