A slew of rumors this afternoon about CC Sabathia. They range from the Giants being
certain they will sign him, to CC
turning down the Yankees offer, to the Yanks
moving on to A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe.
None of them sounds particularly pleasant to my ears. Especially when you read reports of Burnett's asking price soaring up to $100M. If it's true and Sabathia is headed to the city by the Bay to wait out the next earthquake, the Yanks should be turning their attention to Mark Teixeira. The order of free agents who will have the biggest impact on the Yankees goes like this:
- CC Sabathia
- Mark Teixeira
- Manny Ramirez
- Sheets, Lowe, Burnett
- Adam Dunn, Pat Burrell
- Oliver Perez, Randy Wolf
Overpaying for Lowe and/or Burnett is not a wise direction if Sabathia is off the table. CC is the only true ace on the market and really the only one worth getting into a bidding war for. Concentrate on the offense now, get Sheets for a short-term deal and then either Perez or Wolf to round out the rotation.
