It's a long, long season. One loss doesn't mean a whole lot. By the time the first pitch is thrown on Wednesday, I'm sure we will have all thought those words, and for good reason. Today's game, in the grand scheme of things, didn't mean anything.
Obviously, we would've loved to have seen CC throw a fastball harder than 91MPH, but it didn't happen. It would've been great to see Joe Girardi call upon any one of the 5 available righties in the pen to come in for the 8th inning after the Yanks had cut the deficit to one run in the top of the inning, but he didn't. He trotted Phil Coke out there for another inning. Awesome.
Anyway, if you're going to take anything away from this game, Robinson Cano not only walked twice, but he worked the count to 3-1 in three at bats. I don't think he did that in any month last season, let alone in one game. Posada and Matsui went yard. Swisher had a pinch-hit double. Gardner can apparently bunt, and he threw a guy out at the plate.
You never want to lose the first game, you never want to look back and say your dumbass manager completely screwed the pooch in that one, but it happens. You also don't like to see your $161M pitcher go only 4.1 innings, but Sabathia is a notorious slow starter (just ask the 2008 Indians). Luckily, we have 161 games left to make up for this one.
Player of The Game: Posada, for being the only starter with a zero in the LOB column.
Team Record: 0-1
this one game sums up the whole joe g era (which wont last past the 09 season) poor decisions no one can hit in the clutch and wasted money on another average pitcher. with any luck a rod will come back and lead us into third place season is over we have no chance
Unfortunate loss, but you're right. Yanks had a terrible game and still had a chance to win it in the 8th.
And my boy Cano is ready for a big year!
Only thing I really took from this game is that Girardi still hasn't learned how to manage the bullpen. Extremely stupid decision to keep Coke out there after already throwing 1+ innings. Isn't today an off-day? No need to save any of the 5 righties in the bullpen...
Sabathia started out extremely poorly last season too, then had a monster year.
The thing that I take from this has nothing to do with CC or Tex...it's that Jorge Posada is still the worst defensive catcher in the history of baseball. It's been 8 years since he has last blocked a pitch and no one has less range when it comes to catching balls that are outside. The dude is a rotten catcher that cost the Yankees at least 2 runs yesterday.
WHY DON'T PEOPLE EVER MENTION THIS!!!
Because you're not allowed to criticize anyone who came up through the Yankee farm system. They're all perfect in every way, shape, and form. The recommended procedure is to find a way to blame A-Rod
A-Rod trained him on how to be a catcher in the minors, you know, when A-Rod was in middle school probably roiding up.
I prefer to blame Nady's slow ass, jogging after balls in the gap.
