For the third time in three days, Brian Cashman met with CC Sabathia. Was he spurred on by the flurry of rumors this afternoon, each one more dire for the Yankees? We'll probably never know. Were those rumors stoked by Sabathia or his people to ratchet up the Yankee desperation? If they were, the plan worked.
Cashman was supposed to be available to the media tonight, but he was MIA from the Yankee suite at the Bellagio. Called away for a last-minute meeting.
Later, it was reported that
the meeting was with CC (and presumably his wife), and it was taking place in San Francisco. Cash apparently hopped on the Yankee private jet and flew up to San Fran to sit down with his number one target.
Earlier, I was sure they weren't going to land him. At this point let's say I'm guardedly optimistic. Sure, meeting with him three times in three days leads you to believe a deal is imminent, but in the back of my mind there is another explanation for this. Maybe the rumors were true and CC is on the verge of signing with the Giants. If you were Brian Cashman would you sit around your suite in Vegas and let it happen, or would you hop on a plane to make a last-ditch effort to head off those negotiations?
I'm hoping that my paranoia is getting the best of me, but it's hard to predict what Sabathia will do. I mean, say the difference in offers is $20M over six years and his wife is adamant that they stay on the Left Coast. I don't know about you, but I may just take the $120M and trade the extra $20M for peace of mind in my own house.
I will say one thing, if this trip was designed for Cashman to sell CC's wife because he's already sold CC, he probably shouldn't show her this picture or let her talk to the ex Mrs. A-Rod.
I think this is more real this morning.. 7 yrs/160 M. Though I'm not a HUGE fan of the extra year and 20M, you have to make the best decisions you can.
I think he's going to be a monster. Now let's go get Sheets (and Tex if we're ballsy).
