This is the new home for Depressed Fan and Green Pinstripes' Yankee coverage. You can still find your Jets coverage at GP, the Sixers are still at DF and the Eagles have a new home at Don't Boo The Birds.
Ken Rosenthal had a little blurb earlier today talking about Yankee interest in Nick Punto as a utility infielder (HT: MLB Trade Rumors). Punto is your prototypical slap-hitting middle infielder who isn't a day-to-day starter, but I suppose could fill in once in a while.
He's got no pop in his bat, a little speed. Basically, he won't bring much to the table at the plate. In the field, his Revised Zone Rating was .860 at short (Jeter was .839), so I suppose he would be a defensive upgrade if Girardi wanted to get DJ a day off here and there. He can also play second and third.
Signing Punto would be cheap, and he probably couldn't play any worse than Wilson Betemit did as the utility infielder last season. Personally, I'd prefer it if they had never traded Alberto Gonzalez and he was their utility guy. AG had a sick glove.

Nick Punto is, without a doubt, the grindiest grinder of all-time.
Look at that the face he's making, that's a warrior for you. Actually, he's white so Boston will probably sign him to replace Lugo.
Jesus, these profiles are dope as a rope.
Yeah, everything isn't working 100% yet. Once I get the software down they'll be all over every blog.
I don't trust my commenters with this one bit.
He's the scrappiest scrapper. Oh wait, that's Pedroia.
I'd like it, he's a plus-defender. Can't really get both offense and defense from a utility player, it's either one (Betemit) or the other (Punto).
Betemit gave us offense?
Well, that was the intention. I think you're hard pressed to find a utility player that can offer both.
What do you call a utility player that can offer both solid offense and defense?
...
A solid starter.
Yup. I'd settle for a guy with a great glove, not sure Punto is that.
