Next Target: A.J. Burnett
UPDATE: Ken Rosenthal is saying the price for Burnett could reach up to 5 years/$100M if they get into a bidding war with Atlanta and miss out on CC Sabathia. $100M seems like a stretch to me, but I really hope we don't get to the point where Burnett has leverage over the Yanks.
I was hoping against hope that the Atlanta Braves were going to save the Yankees from Carl Pavano Part II, otherwise known as A.J. Burnett. They still may, but this report says the Yanks are preparing an offer to top the Braves' reported 4 year/$60M deal with a vesting option for the fifth year. (HT MLBTR)
Having Burnett sign in Atlanta would've solved two problems. First, the Yanks wouldn't be saddled with another former Marlin who will undoubtedly spend most of his contract on the disabled list. Second, the Yanks wouldn't have to face him.
Burnett sits atop my do not touch list. I firmly believe that should he sign with the Yanks he will get hurt, and he will be a huge mistake. Conversely, I believe if he signs with the Red Sox he will be a workhorse for the next 5 seasons, continue to dominate the Yankees, and ESPN will run "Ha, Ha, You Could've Had Him," stories every time the Yanks play the Sox.
