You just have to love baseball. I mean, absolutely cannot live without it type of love. Take a look at the picture above. A guy with a gut like that is a complete stud when he's standing on a little bump of dirt 60 feet 6 inches away from home plate. What a sport. Tonight,
CC was too much for the Orioles.
A-Rod provided all the offense the Yanks would need with a mammoth blast in the bottom of the first, his fifth tater since returning from hip surgery (he only has 6 hits, total). After that, the Yankee bats hibernated for 5 innings before Mark Teixeira launched one halfway up the 2nd deck in right and they put a 7-spot on the board.
Reader Alex sent me an IM after the game saying basically, "This team has become fun to watch." Indeed. And I think it's becoming blatantly clear to everyone that you really, really don't want to play this Yankee lineup in the new Yankee Stadium. I always have the feeling they're on the verge of scoring 10 runs.
One funny thing from tonight's game. With the Yanks leading 2-1 and Sabathia cruising along in the top of the seventh, Michael Kay made a comment about how it's easy to look like a good manager when your starting pitcher is "dealing." (He also said CC was dealing about 500 times during the game). It struck me as funny because the inning before, Girardi sent Cervelli on a straight steal with Jeter at the plate and no one out. He was gunned down, wasting the leadoff runner with the top of the order coming up. A one-run game and Girardi sends Cervelli. That's how you waste excellent pitching efforts.
Tomorrow will be a big test for the winning streak. Phil Hughes will make what will probably be the final start of his most recent underwhelming stay in the rotation. If the kid can give them five somewhat strong innings, I like their chances. The pen is rested, the offense is clicking. Let's make it 8.
Player of The Game: CC Sabathia
Team Record: 22-17
Up Next: PHughes vs. Guthrie
Was that a straight steal by Cervelli? I thought he misread a hit-and-run sign.
Not Surprising that Mike would come to Girardi's defense.
Guh! I'm not defending him. It's a bad call if it was a straight steal.
My thought exactly.
I'm here to defend Girardi as usual!
I bet it was hit-and-run, Jeter always in-and-outs one to the right side, opens the hole and lowers the chance of a double play.
Come on guys, he won manager of the year once and is a tactical manager (unlike Torre as a personal manager). He studies this team, he's not going to just make bad moves (though he has, just like every other manager).
So your contention is that Jeter missed the sign for a hit-and-run? I'd put my money on a dumbass decision by Girardi, who was promptly fired for being manager of the year (with a sub .500 record).
I don't think Girardi is a great manager or a terrible manager. I'd like to think I calls 'em likes I sees 'em. And I think someone missed a hit-and-run sign.
