When Jimmy Rollins launched the first pitch of the game over the fence in right, you knew this was going to be a long night. When the premium seats seemed to have more red t-shirts than blue, you knew you should be embarrassed. When Carlos Ruiz took Burnett deep in the second inning,
you knew it was over.
Here's the only question I have for you guys: Is it too early to call A.J. Burnett a bust? I mean, we've seen this script play out before, right? In 2005 the Yanks overpaid for another former Marlin right-hander. He came in with high expectations, got lit up through June, headed to the DL and poof, $40M+ down the drain.
I'm not saying it's definitely time to pull out the "b" word, but Burnett looks like he's throwing BP most of the time. On the plus side, at least AJ looks like Mr. Cool on the mound. I mean, I'd hate for it to look like he was actually putting some effort forth when these guys were taking him deep.
Speaking of guys who suck and seem like it doesn't bother them, how 'bout that Nick Swisher? Mohawks are swell when you strike out a couple times a game, aren't they? Xavier Nady, where the hell are you?
OK, that's enough negativity. After all, the Yanks are still 9-1 in their last 10. They have Pettitte on the mound tomorrow. It only took 2:33 to get this loss out of the way. Oh, and the Wanger came back, still throwing sinkers that don't sink.
On the bright side, Teixeira crushed a bomb into the suite deck in right. A-Rod blasted his fifth in seven games and Jeter hit another bomb that wouldn't have been out in any other park in the league.
The Phillies are a good, good baseball team. They have an American League lineup and this series is going to be a real test. The Yanks better show up ready to play tomorrow and in the long term, Burnett better wake up.
Player of The Game: A-Rod
Team Record: 24-18
Up Next: Happ vs. Pettitte tomorrow on Fox (yay!)
I am a big time Phil's phan and I was more than satisfied with last nights game. I wouldn't call AJ a bust yet, because I'm sure you know from being a 76ers fan (I am a member of your Depressed Fan blog) that just because a player starts out crappy, doesn't make him a bust. Think of Elton Brand. We hope that he'll be great next year and that him, Iggy and Thad make a big three next year. My point is that you got him locked up fo' a few more years (another Sixers reference for those of you In the Bronx) so just hope he can settle in. If you wanna hear about a bust look up the 2007 Phillies and Jeff Garcia. Now there's a bust.
