Well, my "taking stock" entry was relevant for about 5 minutes.
The Yankees have reportedly come to terms with A.J. Burnett on a 5-year deal worth $82.5M, according to
Jerry Crasnick. My feelings on the matter haven't changed. This is a guy who's only thrown 200 innings thrice in his 8 years in the league. Twice, those performances came in walk years. If he doesn't have Carl Pavano written all over him, I don't know who does.
The rotation now looks like this:
- CC
- AJ
- CMW
- Joba
- Hughes/Aceves/Kennedy
I have a feeling Andy Pettitte will be manning the #4 spot in the rotation before long. If he can stay healthy, Burnett could give the Yanks a devastating 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation. That if, however, could be worth $82.5M flushed down the tubes.
The question still remaining for the Bombers is, who will hit third?
I think the same of Derek Lowe that you think of Burnett. I was hoping the Yankees would pursue him and take the Phils out of contention. To me, both Burnett and Lowe are injuries waiting to happen.
Yeah, I'm not happy about this. I was hoping the Phils would get AJ, or anyone not in the AL East to be honest with you.
My pessimism tells me that if he'd gone anywhere else he woudl've dominated, but in pinstripes he's going to wind up being a waste of money.
I like the signing and given that we don't have a choice now, time to roll with it.
When healthy, which is a big IF, Burnett is every bit as good as Sabathia. Maybe time for some reverse karma after the Pavano signing.
And Brian, we could do much worse with our #3 pitcher signing.
