Another Ace On the Market?

Buster Olney mentioned a tasty rumor on his blog today, Jake Peavy for Melky Cabrera and Phil Hughes. Olney openly states that this one has pretty much zero chance of happening, but there you have it.

My take: Any deal which features two of my untouchables (Melky, Cano, Hughes Joba) gets an immediate no, unless we're filling more than one hole with young players in return. The reaction to this trade has been lukewarm from bloggers and readers on both sides of the aisle. River Ave Blues backs up their "Hughesian bias" with some logic. San Diego fans weighed in on MLB Trade Rumors in the comments section. The basic response from San Diego: "No F'ing Way!"

Peavy was dominant in 2007, beyond dominant. I just have a big problem with N.L. pitchers. I don't think they're battle tested over there. Add to that the fact that Peavy pitches in the best pitchers' park, in the worst hitting division in the majors and I just wonder how he would fare in the Bronx. Peavy is only 26 years-old, and his contract is an absolute bargain for the next two seasons, but he's got nearly 1100 innings on his arm. If it was Melky and another arm from the minors, or maybe Hughes and a bat from down there I might be willing to make the deal, but not for both of them. Just my two cents.

Back to something I mentioned earlier, "Any deal which features two of my untouchables (Melky, Cano, Hughes Joba) gets an immediate no, unless we're filling more than one hole with young players in return." There may be such a deal floating out there in the ether. Baltimore is apparently willing to listen to talk regarding Erik Bedard, and they seem desperate to move Miguel Tejada. I'd give serious thought to a Melky, Hughes, and a minor leaguer to be named, for Bedard and Tejada. Shelley Duncan may be another guy who interests Baltimore.

One last note. Yesterday, Hammerin' Hank Steinbrenner came out and said the Bombers wouldn't be trading Hughes, Joba or Kennedy for a bat. Those guys are the "least-touchable" in the organization. One name he didn't mention was Chien-Ming Wang. I'm wondering if the Marlins would consider Wang and Melky for Miguel Cabrera. That's a deal I could get behind.

I don't think you want to make that deal. Wang was your bonafide ace this year, esp. at Yankee stadium. Cabrera

I think Wang and Melky is a little easier to stomach than Hughes and Melky, but that may just be the sour taste the playoffs left in my mouth.
