I'd like to extend a personal thank you to Roy Halladay. At least when the Yankees lose to him, I know I'm not going to have to waste a ton of time watching it. Tonight, it took him 2:22 to
polish the bombers off.
There isn't a whole lot of blame to be assigned when a guy like Halladay throws a gem against you, but I'll give it my best shot. Mark Teixeira, 0-4 is bad enough, but two backwards K's. Come on. Take the friggin' bat off your shoulder. Swisher also chipped in his typical looking K. Kevin Cash booted a sick throw from Melky that would've saved a run. They had the guy by about 15 feet, he let it bounce off his chest protector, seemed to hurry more than he needed to. He could've taken a step back to make it an easier play, but that's kind of a tough play and he had no way of knowing how much time he had. That's all I've got. Burnett ruined an otherwise good outing by allowing a couple of meaningless runs to score in the bottom of the eighth, but you knew it was over once Toronto scored first.
More injuries for the Yanks to deal with: Jeter sat out tonight's game with an oblique strain and Matsui left the game after his first at bat with a tight hammy. On the bright side, Ramiro Pena got a chance to flash some leather and also scorched a double off Halladay in the ninth. Jeter is probably going to miss this series, Matsui is listed as questionable.
Since the Yanks really didn't do anything of note, I'm going to take a second to talk about Halladay. If there's one pitcher I desperately want on the Yanks, it's Halladay. The guy is just a machine out there. He works every hitter over, makes them look silly, doesn't use many pitches to do it, and most importantly, he's just pissed when he's on the mound. He's pissed at the batter, pissed at the ump, pissed at the crowd, I feel like he's even pissed at me for watching. It's a thing of beauty. I love ornery guys, especially when they have nothing to be pissed about. If he ever hits the free agent market I hope the Yanks throw too much money at him so he can under-perform in the Bronx when he's clearly past his prime. That would really piss him off.
Player of The Game: A-Rod, 2-out RBI. Yay!
Team Record: 15-17
Up Next: Pettitte vs. Richmond, tomorrow night.
Bright Side: As my wife said the other night, every loss is one day closer to a day without Girardi.
Alas! AJ Skywalker lost to Yoda Halladay in a Jedi dual. Hopefully the Jays can make it to the playoffs this season. I'd love to see the Doc pitch in the ALCS and the WS.
AJ wasn't angry enough.
This one didn't upset me in the least, knew it was a loss going in.
AJ did look nervous on the mound.
BTW, Obi Wang, the one and only Yankees starter who has ever defeated Yoda Halladay, throws six shutout innings in Triple-A rehab start.
These injuries are really starting to pile up. I don't like them one bit.
I swear to God that it's been ten years since we've missed Halladay when we play the Jays. Even in two game series, it feels like we always have to face him. It's an automatic loss every time.
