On Deck (Game 55): Bombers @ ChiSox

Matt DeSalvo (1–2, 5.40 ERA) vs. Jon Garland (3–3, 3.91)

Best-case scenario: Tonight's game is the beginning of a series between two ships passing in the night, each headed in an opposite direction. The Yankees will follow up their impressive series win against the Rojo Sox with a sweep of the Blanco Sox, and they will begin the long, slow climb back to relevancy.

Worst-case scenario: The Yanks follow their pattern exactly. The last time they took two out of three from Boston, they followed it up with a 5–game losing streak. If they lose four straight to Chicago another team is going to be standing between the Yanks and the playoffs. Not a favorable situation.

As commenter and Blue Thoughts author Erin said last night, it would be nice if the Yanks could win a series against someone other than Boston.

Matt DeSalvo was sent down on Friday, then recalled today to make the start. Basically, the Yankees decided anyone would be better than Kei Igawa, who they’ve completely dissected and are reconstructing from scratch in the minors as we speak.

Chicago sends Jon Garland to the hill tonight. Garland is probably the least-assuming 18–game winner in the league. Not only that, but he’s won 18 in back-to-back seasons. His numbers aren’t spectacular, but he gets the job done.

If Abreu, Melky and Cano continue to warm at the plate, Garland is going to be in for a rough night.

Sox blog-of-the-series: Tremendous Upside Potential

What do you think of the rumor of Jermaine Dye (who's a free agent at the end of the season) going to the Yankees for Bobby Abreu?

I get the feeling Chicago would get the better of that trade....

As I sit here and watch the Yanks show absolutely no emotion, and basically roll over and die, I think a change would be good.

It's only the fifth inning, but now probably wasn't a good time for me to answer that question.

Honestly, if Dye is healthy, he'd give the Yanks a desperately needed longball threat, and better defense in right. I'm pretty sure Abreu has a player option that he agreed to waive if the Yanks wanted him to when they made the trade, so they could both be free agents.
