I love it when people try to make me feel guilty for being a Yankee fan. It cracks me up, really. For some reason they seem to think I should abandon my favorite team, the team that I watched lose and barely compete for most of the 80s and early 90s, just because they've become successful. I should trade in my Yankee hat because their owners actually put their money back into their team, rather than their pockets (or a Ponzi scheme, in some cases.) Usually, I just laugh at them because they're the same jackasses that asked me how I could root for a team that never makes the playoffs back in the Mattingly era.
As a follow-up to yesterday's post on the Yankee outfield situation, today we're going to take a look at all of the center fielders in the league. We'll run their numbers through the same formulas we used yesterday for the Yanks to see where they rank.
With the signing of Mark Teixeira, the Yanks now have six guys to play four positions (LF, CF, RF and DH). We're going to use advanced statistics to try to figure out the best combination for the team.
Lost in the whirlwind created by Mark Teixeira's signing is the future of the captain. As has been widely reported, and supported by just about every statistical measure, Derek Jeter's effectiveness at short is on the decline. That may be putting it lightly. Where will Jeter move when he can't play short anymore?
Buster Olney is reporting the Yankees and Mark Teixeira have agreed upon a deal which will pay Teixeira more than $180M over 8 years.
The Yanks have avoided arbitration with Chien-Ming Wang by signing him to a $5M deal for 2009. Peter Abraham has the release. If you recall, the Yanks took CMW to arbitration last season and wound up saving about $600,000. Wang wanted $4.6M, he wound up getting $4M flat.
